Google Business Profile suspended? The calm recovery playbook.

Find the guideline you tripped, fix the profile, then file one thorough appeal with evidence ready. The recovery sequence, timelines and panic moves to avoid.

A suspended Google Business Profile feels like the shop sign being ripped down overnight, but the recovery path is defined and usually measured in days: work out which guideline was tripped, fix the profile so it genuinely complies, then file one thorough appeal through Google's appeals tool with your evidence ready before you start. For a Welsh trade or shop that lives off "near me" searches, the suspension weeks are expensive, so this guide is the calm version of the playbook, including the mistakes that turn a bad fortnight into a bad quarter.

First, do none of the panic things

Three instincts make suspensions worse, and all three are common. Do not create a new profile for the same business; Google links them, and a fresh profile during a suspension reads as evasion and can sink both. Do not fire off an instant appeal before changing anything; an appeal that says "nothing was wrong" against a profile that plainly tripped a rule is how you spend your best chance. And do not storm through the profile making edits mid-review; rapid changes are themselves a suspicion signal, and they muddy the investigation you are asking Google to run.

The productive first hour looks different: read the notice in your dashboard, open Google's guidelines through the link it gives you, and work out honestly which rule your profile broke, because in most cases something real did trip the wire, even if innocently.

Why profiles get suspended

The common causes are consistent enough to check off a list:

TriggerThe usual version of it
Address problemsVirtual offices, PO boxes, a home address customers cannot visit, or an address nobody staffs
Name gamesKeywords stuffed into the business name ("Plumber Swansea 24/7 Best") instead of your real trading name
DuplicatesTwo profiles for one business, or old listings never closed after a move
Edit stormsLots of rapid changes to name, address, categories or phone, often after handing access to a new agency
EligibilityOnline-only or lead-generation setups presented as a local premises
High-risk tradesLocksmiths, garage doors and some home services face stricter automatic checks

Two patterns account for a striking share of small-business suspensions: the keyword-stuffed name, usually added years ago on someone's advice, and the edit storm after a marketing company gets the keys. If either happened shortly before your suspension, you have probably found your cause.

Soft or hard, and why it matters

Check what kind you have. A soft suspension leaves your profile visible to the public but locked to you, marked suspended in your dashboard. A hard suspension removes the profile from Search and Maps entirely, which is the version that empties the phone. Both are recovered the same way, through an appeal, but a hard suspension raises the stakes on doing it properly the first time, because while you wait, the searches you normally win are landing on your competitors.

If you would rather never learn this process under pressure, our Google Business Profile management runs profiles inside the guidelines week in, week out, for £99 +VAT a month with every price published, and prevention is cheaper than any recovery.

Fix first, appeal second

Make the profile honestly compliant before you touch the appeals tool: the real trading name with the keywords stripped out, an address that is genuinely yours and staffed, duplicates closed, categories that describe what you actually do. Then, signed in with the same Google account that manages the profile, open the appeals tool, select the suspended profile and complete the questionnaire.

The written explanation matters more than its length. In a few plain sentences, say what your business is, what you believe caused the suspension, and exactly what you changed to fix it. "Our profile name included extra keywords; we have corrected it to our registered trading name, Cwm Taf Roofing Ltd" beats three paragraphs of protest. You are writing for a reviewer who sees hundreds of these; make the honest case easy to approve.

Have the evidence ready before you open the form

After submitting the appeal you can add evidence, and you should treat that step as mandatory even though Google labels it optional. One practical wrinkle: practitioners consistently report that once the evidence upload form is opened, you have roughly an hour to finish it, so assemble the packet first. The strong packet proves you are a real business at a real address: official registration or licence documents, a utility bill or lease showing the business name and address, exterior photos including your permanent signage, interior photos of the working premises, branded-vehicle photos for service-area trades, and a screenshot of your website showing the same name, address and phone as the profile. Everything should match everything; mismatched details are how genuine businesses fail appeals.

Google is not asking whether your business is good. It is asking whether it is real, at that address, under that name. Answer that question and only that question.

Timelines, and the second chance

Reviews typically come back within about three to five business days, sometimes longer in awkward cases, and reinstated profiles usually reappear on Search and Maps within a couple of days of approval. If the appeal is denied, there is generally one further "additional review" available, which is precisely why the first submission deserves your best evidence rather than your fastest typing. Beyond that, the Google Business Profile Help Community, staffed by product experts who can escalate genuine cases, is the legitimate last resort. What does not exist is a phone number that fixes it, and anyone selling guaranteed same-day reinstatement is charging for the queue you can join free.

While you wait, your website carries the load: it still ranks organically, and it is the one channel Google cannot suspend, which is an argument for owning a good one that no suspension ever makes gently.

Making the profile suspension-proof

Recovered or never suspended, the durable position is the same boring one: your real name, your real address, steady activity instead of bursts, one profile per genuine location, and changes made sparingly and deliberately. That weekly rhythm, posts, photos, review replies, hours kept true, is exactly the loop our guide to Google Business Profile optimisation sets out, and pairing it with a steady flow of genuine reviews per our Google reviews guide builds the kind of profile history that sails through automated checks.

The plain next step

If your profile is suspended right now: cause found, profile fixed, evidence gathered, one calm appeal. That sequence, done today, has you inside the typical review window by the weekend. If you would rather hand the whole thing over, profile management, the guideline-safe setup and the weekly loop, get in touch and we will tell you plainly what we can do and what it costs from our published prices, no obligation. And if this guide got you reinstated on your own, that is the outcome we wrote it for.

Frequently asked questions.

Usually a guideline trip: keywords stuffed into the business name, an address customers cannot actually visit, duplicate profiles, or a burst of rapid edits, often after a new agency takes over. High-risk trades like locksmiths also face stricter automatic checks.

Fix the profile first so it genuinely complies, then submit one appeal through Google's appeals tool, signed in with the account that manages the profile, with a short explanation naming the cause and the fix, and upload evidence proving the business is real at that address.

Typical reviews come back within three to five business days, and reinstated profiles usually reappear on Search and Maps within a couple of days of approval. Awkward cases take longer, and a denied appeal generally allows one further additional review.

No. Google links profiles for the same business, and a fresh listing during a suspension reads as evasion and can sink both. One properly evidenced appeal on the original profile is the only route worth taking.

Documents proving a real business at a real address under the profile's exact name: official registration or licences, a utility bill or lease, exterior photos showing permanent signage, interior photos, branded vehicles for service-area trades, and a website screenshot with matching name, address and phone. Assemble it before opening the upload form, which practitioners report allows roughly an hour.
