Plumber website design: winning emergency calls and boiler quotes.

What a UK plumbing website needs to win both the 10pm emergency and the £3,000 boiler quote: tap-to-call speed, Gas Safe trust signals and pages that rank locally.

Plumber website design comes down to serving two very different customers on one site: the panicking homeowner with water coming through the ceiling, and the family calmly comparing quotes for a £3,000 boiler swap. A website that wins both kinds of work needs a phone number that is one thumb-tap away, proof you are Gas Safe registered and worth trusting, and pages that rank for "plumber in" your town. Professionally built, that costs from £675 +VAT with us, and this guide explains exactly what the money should buy.

The two customers every plumbing website serves

Most guides treat "a plumber's website" as one thing. In practice your site is doing two jobs that pull in opposite directions.

The emergency customer is not browsing. Their boiler has died on the coldest night of January, or a compression fitting has let go behind the washing machine. They search "emergency plumber near me", tap the first two or three results that look real, and call. They will never read your About page. For this customer, the whole website is the phone number, the areas you cover, and enough visible legitimacy that they trust you to walk through the door.

The planned customer is the opposite. A bathroom refit or a boiler replacement is a four-figure decision, researched over days or weeks, usually by comparing two or three local firms. This customer reads everything: your previous work, your reviews, whether your photos look like real jobs or stock images, how easy it is to request a quote. Planned work is where the margin lives, and it is won by the depth of the site, not the speed of it.

We see this two-audience split constantly in the trades we build for. Wales Roofing Solutions in Neath serves both one-off domestic repairs and commercial contracts, and their site had to be structured for both readers from day one. A plumbing business has exactly the same shape: fast lane for emergencies, slow lane for the jobs that pay best.

The burst-pipe test: designing for the emergency call

Open your current website on your phone and time how long it takes to call yourself. That is the burst-pipe test, and most plumbing sites fail it: number buried in a footer, a contact form where a call button should be, or a page that takes six seconds to load on mobile data while the kitchen floods.

Passing it is not complicated, but it has to be deliberate:

  • A tap-to-call button visible without scrolling, on every page, because emergency searchers land wherever Google sends them.
  • Load speed under a couple of seconds on a phone. Emergency searches happen on mobiles, often on poor signal. Every site we build loads in under a second precisely because slow pages lose exactly this caller.
  • Your coverage area stated plainly. "Serving Neath, Port Talbot and the valleys" saves a wasted call in both directions.
  • Hours and honesty. If you do not do 24-hour call-outs, say so; nothing burns trust like an unanswered emergency line.

If you would rather have all of this handled by someone who builds for trades every week, our web design service starts at £675 +VAT with published prices for everything beyond it.

Boilers and bathrooms: where the website earns its keep

Emergency work fills the diary; installations pay for the van. The planned-work side of your site earns its keep with three things.

First, real photos of finished jobs. A gallery of your own bathroom installs beats any stock photo, and it does double duty as proof for the emergency customer that you are an established business. Phone photos are fine; ten genuine images outperform two professional ones of someone else's work.

Second, a proper quote route. A form asking for job type, rough timescale and a photo of the existing setup filters tyre-kickers and lets you price the serious enquiries before you visit. We built the timber firm Bramwood a quote builder for exactly this reason: their garden buildings, like your bathroom refits, are considered purchases where a structured enquiry converts far better than "call for a quote".

Third, pages for the work you actually want. If boiler installation is your best margin, it deserves its own page answering the questions every customer asks: which brands you fit, what a typical swap costs, how long it takes, what guarantee comes with it. One honest page like that outranks ten paragraphs of "we offer a full range of plumbing services".

Trust: Gas Safe, reviews and photos that look like your van

Plumbing is a trust purchase in a way few trades are: you are asking strangers to let you into their home, often in a crisis. The website's job is to lower that barrier before the phone rings.

If you carry out gas work, you are Gas Safe registered by law, and your registration number belongs on the site where customers can see it, not just on the certificate in the van. Public liability insurance, guarantees on workmanship, and memberships like WaterSafe or CIPHE all belong in the same visible trust block.

Reviews carry the rest. Google reviews specifically, because they show up in the map results where local customers actually choose. Ask after every completed job while the customer is pleased, and let the site surface them. This is a discipline we apply to ourselves as much as to clients: every one of our own 16 Google reviews is five stars, and they are all from real Welsh business owners. Here is what the director of a roofing firm we built for says:

"We had a fantastic experience working with Jack on our website. From start to finish he was professional, friendly, and helpful. He offered great ideas and suggestions that really improved the final result." · Bethan Parry, Wales Roofing Solutions

Your own website vs Checkatrade and MyBuilder

The honest answer, not the salesman's answer: directories and your own website do different jobs, and early on you may want both.

Checkatrade, MyBuilder and Bark sell you leads. The leads are real, but they are rented: you pay membership or per-lead fees forever, the same lead is often sold to several plumbers at once, and the customer relationship belongs to the platform. Stop paying and the tap turns off the same day.

Your own website is owned. It costs more up front and takes months to rank, but every enquiry it produces is exclusive, free at the margin, and compounds: the reviews, the photos, the rankings all accrue to your business rather than to a directory's. The pattern we see with established trades is consistent: directories to fill the diary in year one, then a steady shift to website and word-of-mouth enquiries as rankings build, until the directory fee stops making sense. Our guide to the best tradesman websites in the UK shows what that end state looks like across six real Welsh trade businesses.

What plumber website design costs

RouteTypical costWhat you get
DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace)£10 to £30 a monthYour evenings, a template, no local SEO to speak of
Template from a cheap provider£300 to £800 one-offA reskinned theme, often slow, rarely maintained
Custom build (our Starter)£675 +VAT one-offDesigned for your trade, sub-second loading, local SEO foundations
Larger custom site (our Professional)£1,350 +VAT one-offMore pages, quote routes, room for every service to rank

Whatever you spend on the build, budget for it staying alive: hosting, security updates, backups and small changes. Ours is £39 +VAT a month, published like every other price on our pricing page, so there is nothing to negotiate and nothing hidden in the quote.

Getting found for "plumber in" your town

Design wins the customer; local SEO wins the visit. For a plumbing business the local search work is specific: a Google Business Profile in the right category with reviews arriving steadily, service pages that name the towns you genuinely cover, and a website fast enough that Google trusts it. The searches you want are unglamorous: "plumber neath", "boiler service port talbot", "emergency plumber bridgend". They are also winnable, because most local plumbing sites are template jobs nobody has touched since launch.

This is the part most plumbers understandably never get to, which is why our Google Business Profile management exists as a monthly service: the weekly loop of posts, review responses and profile upkeep, done for you.

What we would build for your plumbing business

A site that passes the burst-pipe test on a phone, sells your boiler and bathroom work properly, shows your Gas Safe number and your real reviews, and ranks for your town rather than a directory's. We build for Welsh trades constantly: roofers, tilers, carpenters and builders across Neath, Bridgend and Caerphilly, and the playbook transfers to plumbing directly.

Prices are published, the first conversation is free and without obligation, and you deal with Jack directly from first call to launch. Start your project or compare the packages on our pricing page first.

Honest pricing

Frequently asked questions.

DIY builders run £10 to £30 a month, cheap templates £300 to £800, and a custom professional build from £675 +VAT with us. The difference shows in mobile speed, local rankings and whether the site actually produces enquiries.

Directories sell the same lead to several plumbers and the customer relationship stays with the platform. A website costs more up front but every enquiry is exclusive and the rankings, reviews and photos accrue to your business permanently.

A tap-to-call button on every page, your Gas Safe number and insurance, real photos of finished jobs, the towns you cover, and a dedicated page for high-margin work like boiler installation with honest answers about brands, prices and guarantees.

A Google Business Profile in the right category with steady reviews, service pages naming the towns you genuinely cover, and a fast website. Searches like "plumber neath" or "boiler service port talbot" are winnable because most local plumbing sites are untouched templates.

For emergencies, no: emergency customers call, so the phone number must be one tap away. A structured quote form earns its place for planned work like bathroom refits, where it filters enquiries and lets you price jobs before visiting.
